According to a report in the Financial Times, China has recently test-fired a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile, demonstrating its advanced space capability. Many countries including the US, Russia, and China are developing hypersonic missiles that travel at a speed of 5 times faster than sound.

Key findings of the Financial Times report

According to the said report of the Financial Times, the launch of this missile was kept secret by China. The missile orbited the globe before moving towards its target. However, it dropped its result by about 24 miles.

The Chinese military has launched a rocket carrying a hypersonic glider vehicle, which flies in low-Earth orbit.

This missile test shows that China has made impressive progress on hypersonic weapons. This test of China was more advanced than America.

According to the Dew report of the Financial Times, the weapon could theoretically rise above the South Pole. This will be a major challenge for the US military as its missile defense system is focused on the North Polar route.

The report also noted that it usually announces the launch of its Long March rockets but hid these missile launches from the world in August 2021.

Hypersonic Missile speed and technology

  • Hypersonic speed is 5 times or more than "Mac or the speed of sound".
  • Make Number: It describes the speed of an aircraft in comparison to the speed of sound in the air. In which Mech 1 is equal to the speed of sound i.e. 343 meters per second.

Hypersonic Missile Types

Hypersonic cruise missiles: These are missiles that use rocket or jet propellant during their flight and are considered a faster version of existing cruise missiles.

Hypersonic Glide Vehicle (HGV): These missiles first go into the atmosphere via a conventional rocket before being launched towards the target.
